I read a story published by the Los Angeles times that methadone abuse is becoming deadly. I had lots of questions for a while as to how the methadone abuse was deadly but in reading the article, it stated that more doctors are now prescribing methadone for pain relief. The history of the drug was that it first was used for treatment of addicts to opiates such as heroin and opium. The drug works well to block receptors in one’s body that would otherwise accept heroin molecules and create the high.
But recently since the 1990′s, doctors have been prescribing it as the preferred medication for severe pain and chronic pain. The only problem now is that some people become addicted to the medication and take it in ever increasing doses that lead to methadone overdose. Others have heard that it is a strong drug to get high off of and acquire the drug by many different means. This abuse can easily lead to overdose or death. The majority of the deaths from this drug are those abusing it for the high.
